Best time to visit Bolivia
Bolivia's climate varies by region. There are three main regions that influence the weather in Bolivia: the Altiplano in the west, the central highlands in the south-central region just beyond the Andes, and the tropical lowlands in the east.
The weather pattern changes depending on the region and the time of year. And there is a wet season and a dry season to consider before booking a trip to Bolivia.
Best time to visit in general
For most travelers, May-Oct is the best time to visit Bolivia. This is the dry period, but also the Bolivian winter. The highlands can be cold then and at night in the desert it can get well below freezing, especially in June and July.
The humid jungle does benefit from these cooler temperatures. The beginning of the dry season in April-May, has lower prices and fewer crowds, but still feels fresh from the recent rains. October and November are also dry but warmer, with spring approaching and crowds spreading.
Dry and wet seasons
Instead of the traditional four seasons, Bolivia has only the dry and wet seasons. Although these vary somewhat throughout the country, the dry season usually begins in May and ends in late November.
The wet season takes up the rest of the year. The torrential rains usually fall between January and March. The other relatively wet months usually have at most one localized rainfall event per day.
Altiplano
In the southern Altiplano the sky is beautifully blue, but it is also very cold, dropping well below freezing at night. The rainy season here runs from November to March and can sometimes cause hindrance on the roads. However, travel is possible.
Central Highlands
The best time to visit the highlands in Bolivia is from April to October. This is the cold winter period, but it should be dry with plenty of blue skies and sunshine and temperatures around 10°C.
Tropical Lowlands
The eastern lowlands, including Santa Cruz and the Amazon, have warm temperatures between 15°C and 31°C throughout the year. You'll have mostly dry and sunny weather here, but temperatures can still plummet at night. So dress warmly.
