Best time to visit Tenerife

Tenerife is a popular tourist destination all year owing to its gorgeous, warm, and sunny weather. The north-eastern trade winds are responsible for Tenerife's unique climate. These collect water vapour over the Atlantic Ocean, climb across the northern slopes of the Pico del Teide, and eventually drip down in fine drizzle.

Temperatures change because the Teide functions as a weather divide, creating two microclimates to the north and south.

Summer vacation

The months of May through the end of September are ideal for visiting the south of Tenerife, as the weather begins to heat up. It draws people in with its long, pleasant days and gentle evenings. A wonderful cold sea wind refreshes even the hottest summer days.

The ideal months to explore Tenerife's north and east are May, June, and October, when temperatures are warm and no rain is forecast. The summer months of July, August, and September will be warmer.

Tenerife's winter season

If you're visiting Tenerife during the winter, it's preferable to stay in the south. Tenerife's winters are exceptionally warm, making it a popular time to come, especially in February, when the island is famed for its Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival. It is the world's second largest carnival, after Rio's, and is ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

Surfers visit in the winter to ride the south coast's massive rollers. During the spring, you may also see long-finned pilot whales and gather oranges. Rooms will be quite expensive during the Christmas and Carnival seasons.

The largest and most famous Canary Island is Tenerife, with more than 10 million visitors each year. This is also the island with the highest mountain in Spain. The snow-capped mountain El Teide can be seen clearly in good weather from the surrounding islands. The rest of the island consists of tropical forests, volcanic lava areas and beautiful sandy beaches. The capital is Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Tenerife's weather makes it very popular among sun lovers. The climate is very favorable throughout the year. In the summer it is nice with 23°C and in the winter it is still pleasant with 18°C.

The southern part of the island is the most popular. The sun shines here almost every day of every month of the year. On average, the number of hours of sunshine is between 9 and 10 hours a day. It rains only occasionally.

Fine sea water temperature

The average sea water temperature per month in Tenerife is also very nice for swimming. The sea temperature is between 20°C in winter and around 25°C in summer. Famous seaside resorts in Tenerife are Costa Adeje and Playa de las Americas.

Also for hikers almost every month in Tenerife is suitable for activities. Only in the winter period there is a chance of snow in the mountains. The hiking trails in the national park can then sometimes be closed. The coolest months are November through May, but even then it is never cold. And in the middle of summer it can sometimes even be too hot.

Looking for an island with a little more green than Gran Canaria is recommended. If you want to be assured of sunshine, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the places to go.
